SS 316 vs 316L — Which Stainless Steel Grade Should You Choose?

A practical engineering guide to choosing between 316 and 316L for welded fabrications, marine service and pharmaceutical applications.

Understanding the L

The "L" in 316L denotes low carbon — capped at 0.03% versus up to 0.08% in standard 316. This subtle reduction prevents chromium-carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding, dramatically improving intergranular corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone.

When 316L Wins

Choose 316L for any welded structure that will not be solution-annealed post-weld, especially in chloride or sour-service environments, pharmaceutical skids and food/dairy processing equipment.

When 316 is Sufficient

For machined components, fasteners and applications where service temperatures stay below 425°C and welding is minimal, standard 316 offers slightly higher tensile strength at competitive cost.

Procurement Tip

Always specify dual-certified "316/316L" plate when in doubt — most modern mills produce material that meets both chemistries on a single MTC.
